বাউল প্রেমিক বইটি শ্রী সনাতন বাউল দাস ঠাকুরের সম্পূর্ণ সাধনজীবনের ফসল। আমি আত্মবিশ্বাসের সঙ্গে বলতে চাই যে, এই বইটিই প্রথম— যা আধুনিক শিক্ষিত সমাজের সঙ্গে বাউল সাধনাকে পরিচিত করাতে চেয়েছে, যা একজন বাউলসাধকের নিজের লেখা। ‘বাউল প্রেমিক’ গ্রন্থটি একজন বাউল ও প্রেমিকের মধ্যে কথোপকথন। প্রেমিক প্রশ্ন করেন আর বাউল তাঁর মহাজনী জ্ঞানভাণ্ডারের উপরে ভিত্তি করে পদগুলিকে ব্যাখ্যা করে প্রেমিকের প্রশ্নের সমাধান করেন। এই কথোপকথন চলতে চলতে শেষের দিকে বাউল গভীর সাধনতত্ত্বে প্রবেশ করেন।
সেই কারণেই এই বইটি অন্য কোনো বর্ণনামূলক বইয়ের চেয়ে আলাদা। বহু প্রাচীন ও মূল্যবান শাস্ত্র-পুঁথিতেও এমন কথোপকথনের মাধ্যমে বহু গভীর সাধন-রহস্যের ব্যাখ্যা করা হয়েছে। যেমন— কঠোপনিষদে নচিকেতা-ধর্মরাজের কথোপকথন বা শিব স্বরোদয়াতে শিব-পার্বতীর কথোপকথন। কোথাও যেন বইটি আবার একটি নাটকের ভাবও তৈরি করে। ‘বাউল প্রেমিক’ গ্রন্থটি বাউল সাধকদের একনিষ্ঠ জীবনের সাথে আমাদের পরিচয় ঘটায়। গ্রন্থটি পাঠ করে আমাদের বাউল মার্গ (যোগ ও ভক্তি) সম্বন্ধে অনেক ধারণা পরিষ্কার হয়। বাউল সঙ্গীত ও সাধনা পরস্পরের পরিপূরক— একটিকে বাদ দিয়ে অন্যটি নয়। যত দিন বাউল সাধনা ও সঙ্গীত সম্পৃক্ত থাকবে, তত দিন বাউলের ভাব বজায় থাকবে। সাধনাবিহীন শুধু সঙ্গীত হয় না।
বাউল মার্গে পুরো শিক্ষাটাই শ্রুতিনির্ভর। সেই ধারা অনুসরণ করে গুরু শ্রী সনাতন দাস বাউল এই গ্রন্থে লিখিত রূপে প্রকাশ করেছেন। সেই জন্য এই গ্রন্থটি বাউল সমাজের একটি মূল্যবান আকরগ্রন্থ ও সম্পদ হয়ে থাকবে। এবং আগামীতে যাঁরা বাউল চর্চা ও সাধনা করবেন, অথবা যাঁরা আগ্রহী হবেন, তাঁদের এই গ্রন্থ অবশ্যই পঠনীয়।
পূর্ব প্রকাশিত বাউল প্রেমিক গ্রন্থটিকে এই চতুর্থ সংস্করণে ‘সূত্রপাত’ অংশে রাখা হয়েছে এবং অপ্রকাশিত পাণ্ডুলিপি ‘অন্তিম চরণ’ অংশে রাখা হয়েছে। তৃতীয় সংস্করণে বাউল ও প্রেমিকের মধ্যে যে বার্তালাপের সূত্র খণ্ডিত ছিল এই সংস্করণে তাদের কথোপকথন একই সূত্রে একটি নদীর প্রবাহের মতো নিরন্তন ভাবে বাহিত হলো। জাপানের অধ্যাপক শ্রী মাসাইউকি ওনিশি ও কলকাতা নিবাসী অধ্যাপক শ্রী দুর্গা দত্ত তাঁদের নেওয়া সাক্ষাৎকারটি নির্দ্বিধায় প্রকাশ করতে দেওয়ায়, যাঁরা বাবাকে দেখেননি তাঁরা কথা/শব্দের মাধ্যমে বাবাকে স্পর্শ করতে পারবেন বলে আশা রাখি। এ ছাড়াও এই গ্রন্থে সংযোজিত হল বাবার স্বরচিত সঙ্গীত ও বেশ কিছু ছবি। বাবার গাওয়া কিছু অডিও ট্র্যাকও এই বইতে সংযোজন করা হল।

Synopsis of "Baul Premik"
The book “Baul Premik” is the result of Sri Sanatan Baul Das Thakur's entire life of sadhana.
This book is the first of its kind to introduce Baul Sadhana to the contemporary modern world, coming from a Baul Sadhak himself.
It is a conversation between Baul and Premik. Premik puts his question forward and the Baul solves his query by explaining the verses based on his knowledge (Mahagyani bhandar). As this conversation progresses, towards the end, the Baul enters into deep sadhana tattva.
That is why this book is different from any other explanatory book. Dialogues have been the mode of sharing profound mysteries of sadhana in several ancient and valuable scriptures. For example, Nachiketa-Dharmaraja dialogue in Kathopanishad or Shiva-Parvati dialogue in Shiva Swarodaya.
In some places, this book creates a dramatic exuberance. The book 'Baul Premik' introduces us to the devotional life of the Baul saints. Many ideas about Baul Marga (Yoga and Bhakti) get clarified. Baul music and Sadhana are complementary — one is not exclusive of the other. The spirit of Baul Sadhana attains its purest form in combining sadhana and music, as there is no Baul music without sadhana.
The entire philosophy of the Baul Marg is based on auditory expression. Keeping that trend, Guru Sri Sanatan Baul Das Thakur expresses his knowledge in written format, making this book an invaluable source of information about the Baul tradition. In the future, this book will be a treasure for those who will be interested and will want to take up the sadhana in the Baul tradition.
The previously published first and second edition of the book “Baul Premik” are presented in this fourth edition in the section named ‘Sutrapat', and an unpublished manuscript has been added in the section named 'Antim Charan'. The dialogue between Baul and Premik, which seemed somewhat fragmented in the third edition, flows like a river here in the fourth edition.
We are grateful to Professor Sri Masayuki Onishi of Japan and Professor Sri Durga Dutt of Calcutta for allowing us to publish their interview with Sanatan Baba. Those who have not seen Baba will be able to feel his being through words and sounds in this interview.
Apart from this, the reader will get to know several songs composed by Baba. Some of the audio tracks sung by him have also been included in this book. Several pictures have been added for the reader to get a glimpse of his life.
